Healthy and Balanced  

Monday, April 1, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg  

Maintaining a healthy weight and consuming a nutrient-rich diet after the completion of cancer treatment can be challenging. With the proper tools and support, you can find a healthy balance while achieving your weight management goals. 

Join us monthly and work towards being healthy and balanced. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge.

Cleveland Park Events Center  

Falls in people ages 65 and older are among the most common injuries in that age population. As a result, many seniors are unable to live an independent lifestyle. 

The Stay Active & Independent for Life (SAIL) program is a free fall prevention program that includes a one-hour, twice-per-week group fitness class where all participants work at their own pace. Any person over the age of 50, including those that use walkers or canes, can participate in the SAIL program.

YMCA of Greater Spartanburg - Thomas E. Hannah  

The Cancer Survivorship Program will be offering weekly opportunities for physical activity and fellowship with one another in 2024 through walking. Join us as we walk our way to wellness! 

This group will meet at YMCA of Greater Spartanburg, Thomas E. Hannah (151 Ribault St., Spartanburg, SC 29302). We will be walking around the track above the basketball court inside the YMCA gymnasium.

A certified lactation specialist facilitates an open, supportive forum to talk about the challenges and joys of breastfeeding in a casual gathering for breastfeeding moms and babies from birth through six months. Meet other mothers, discuss concerns and learn tips on breastfeeding and life with a new baby.    

 

Virtual Prediabetes Workshop 

Wednesday, April 3, 3 to 4 p.m. 

Did you know that one in three American adults has pre-diabetes? Good news, we can help! 

Attend a virtual, one-hour session to answer these questions: 

  • How can I manage my pre-diabetes? 
  • Do I need to change what I eat? 
  • What resources are available in my community?

Cooking up Confidence - Virtual Cooking Series

The series is offered every other Thursday: March 7, 21 and April 4, 18. Come to one or come to all!

Cook along with various healthcare professionals from diabetes education, food services and cardiology from the comfort of your own home. 

Cooking Up Confidence is a series of four virtual cooking classes and will cover a variety of different cooking techniques to make home-prepared meals easier and fun! Recipes can be adapted to meet your family's needs. 

Classes will be taught using a FoodShare Spartanburg produce box, but are not required to participate.The recipe and grocery list will be sent out by the Monday before class. For more information on ordering a box, please click on the event link above.  

 

Breast Cancer Support Group 

Monday, April 8, 5:45 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program offers a monthly opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to connect with one another. This unique offering is available to breast cancer patients and survivors at no charge. 

Research shows that taking part in support groups, where you both give and receive help, is an effective way to reduce the stress and anxiety that can come with a breast cancer diagnosis. 

This support group will be led by Gail Ebert, MMFT, LMFT-A, CAMS-II, CPC of Illuminate Therapy, Spartanburg.

In collaboration with our March of Dimes NICU Family Support program, we are excited to offer our community an infant CPR class. 

Infant CPR offers lifesaving safety information. This non-certification infant CPR class is designed specifically for expectant parents. Our essential hands-on class provides the skills and confidence to turn a life-threatening situation into a lifesaving one. Come gain the confidence, skills and knowledge essential to saving an infant's life.  

 

Understanding GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common condition in which the stomach contents move up into the esophagus. Reflux becomes a disease when it causes frequent or severe symptoms or injury and may damage the esophagus, pharynx or respiratory tract. 

Gastroenterologist Michael Beattie, DO, with Medical Group of the Carolinas - Gastroenterology - Pelham, will share measures to prevent developing GERD, common and uncommon symptoms, how this is diagnosed and ways it can be treated.

Gibbs Cancer Center - Pelham or online 

Join us at Gibbs Cancer Center - Pelham or online every second Tuesday of the month for learning opportunities and time to talk with fellow cancer patients and survivors. Our support group is a safe place to discuss your cancer diagnosis and what you are going through. 

This month we will have Kristin Dennis, PT join us to talk about pelvic floor health and ways to prepare for surgery to ensure the best outcomes. 

Light snacks will be provided.

Join Dr. Janet LeFrancois, certified yoga therapist and Iyengar yoga teacher, to practice basic to advanced yoga with a focus on cancer patients and survivors.  

Attendees are welcome to bring their own mats, blocks and other yoga tools to the class. If this is your first time attending, a mat and block will be provided for you to use. Registration is required so that we can make space for all attendees. 

 

Music Therapy 

Thursday, April 11, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program will be offering monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while engaging in music therapy. 

Music therapy interventions can target a variety of healthcare goals such as promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, express feelings and emotions, enhance memory, improve communication, promote physical rehabilitation, sensory processing and more. This session will be hosted by Carolina Music Therapy. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

 

Prepared Parents: Infant Care   

Thursday, April 11, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

This course prepares expectant parents for their baby's impending arrival. Topics include breastfeeding, diapering, bathing, and medical and safety information. A local pediatrician and a perinatal educator will lead this class. 

 

Union Prostate Cancer Support Group 

Thursday, April 11, 5 to 6 p.m. 

Union County Carnegie Library or online 

Join us at the Union County Library or online every second Thursday of the month for learning opportunities and time to talk with fellow cancer patients and survivors. Our support group is a safe place to discuss your cancer diagnosis and what you are going through.

Diabetes Wellness Circle    

Tuesday, April 16, noon to 1 p.m. 

Online

Diabetes Wellness Circle is an online and in-person support group that supports, encourages and educates anyone living with diabetes. Everyone is welcome. Meetings consist of 30-45 minutes of education followed by 15 minutes of discussion. Please join the forum and then stay as long as you are able.    

 

Prepared Breastfeeding  

Tuesday, April 16, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

Our breastfeeding class is an in-depth introduction that includes the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby. In this class, you will learn about milk production, feeding cues, latching techniques, milk storage and problem-solving tips for successful breastfeeding.  

 

Cardiac Connection – Benefits of Sleep  

Wednesday, April 17, noon to 1 p.m. 

Heart Wellness Center - Spartanburg 

Did you know that improving sleep habits can also improve cardiovascular health?  

Join us as we talk about how sleep affects heart health and ways to get better sleep. 

Cardiac Connection is a monthly community group that supports people of all ages who have experienced a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke, had surgery related to the heart or are at risk for heart disease. Relevant topics and speakers vary each month. Bring your lunch and a friend! 

In addition, we offer encouragement and lifestyle improvement activities. You may also connect with others who have had similar experiences. If you or a loved one are interested, please join us. 

 

Weight Loss Surgery - Online Support Group    

Thursday, April 18, noon to 1 p.m. 

Online Event 

This group provides Upstate area support for patients in all phases of the weight loss surgery process. Combined with the help of friends and family members, this support group allows you to network with others who have experienced similar challenges and lifestyle changes after weight loss surgery. Patients who have not yet had surgery are encouraged to attend.    

 

Miniature Painting Art Class 

 Tuesday, April 23, 6 to 7:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg  

The Survivorship Program will be offering monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while creating art projects. 

Join us for miniature painting art class. This session will be hosted by Youmi Efurd, PhD, from Wofford College in the Gibbs Auditorium. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

 

Safe Kids 101 for New and Expecting Parents 

Thursday, April 25 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online

This one-hour webinar includes safety topics that will help you keep your child safe and avoid accidents and injuries. 

Class information includes information about basic car seat features, installation techniques and how to choose an appropriate car seat based on your child's age, height and weight. 

Learn ways to avoid accidents in the home involving fire, burns, drowning, falls and poisonings. Know how to identify safe and unsafe sleep environments for your baby. 

 

Skin Cancer Screening  

Thursday, April 25, 5 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Union 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Union is hosting a FREE skin cancer screening event open to the public. Start the spring by checking your skin. 

A spot skin cancer screening is fast, easy, and pain-free. This screening is open to adults ages 18 and older who are not currently under the care of a dermatologist.

Prepared Childbirth    

Thursday, April 25, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center  

Learn everything you need to know about the childbirth process and the options available during pregnancy, labor and delivery. In this class, we provide the information you need to reduce anxiety and help you have a more positive birth experience. Prepared Childbirth is a comprehensive, fact-based and fun class covering various topics about your baby's birthday. Leave a few extra minutes to enjoy a nourishing snack as well and chat with other services that women can enjoy. 

 

Caregiver Café – Sing for the Health of it

This is a time to learn about caregiving resources available within the health system and in the community, ask questions that are specific to your loved one's care and build a support system of others facing some of the same challenges. 

In April, Sing for the Health of It! Even if you cannot "carry a tune in a bucket", come explore ways to use your voice for health, connection and comfort.

Veg Edge Potluck

Come join us to learn about the benefits of Whole Food Plant Based Nutrition (WFPBN) every first Tuesday of the month. 

No need to register. Just show up with a dish to share! Please adhere to WFPBN guidelines (no meat, dairy, or oil and minimal added sugar and salt) and bring the recipe to share. Reach out to Lori at [email protected] if you'd like some recommendations about where to find recipe ideas.
