GYN Oncologist Carlton Schwab, MD, joins Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute

Carlton Schwab, MD, was a college student eating in a restaurant when he witnessed a man having a stroke. Helping this man during a traumatic event led Dr. Schwab down the path to become a doctor. 

“I helped the man until EMS got there,” Dr. Schwab said. “I then went to medical school, and decided to go into OB/GYN after holding a baby I delivered.” 

Dr. Schwab worked in oncology during his residency and was drawn to helping cancer patients through their illness. Dr. Schwab combined his interest in the fields of OB/GYN and oncology and became a gynecologic oncologist. Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute welcomes Dr. Schwab to the team. 

“I like the continuity of care with oncology,” he said. “You are there to help a person with cancer through the difficult times and the good times. You're their support person.” 

Gynecologic oncology is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on cancers of the female reproductive system, including ovarian, uterine, vaginal, cervical and vulvar. 

“We look at each patient, understand them as a person and personalize the treatment to that person,” Dr. Schwab said. “We discuss their fears, make sure they understand their diagnosis and help educate them about their disease process—from diagnosis through treatment.” 

Every patient at Gibbs receives “multidisciplinary care” where teams of surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and other clinicians discuss individual cases and develop personalized treatment plans specific to each patient.

Dr. Schwab received his medical degree at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, completed his residency at Medical University of South Carolina and a fellowship at Yale School of Medicine.
