Take a hike... safely

Many of us want to commune with nature as the seasons change. But just because we own the gear, doesn't mean we're invincible like Paul Bunyan.

Here are 7 tips to keep you on track while you're on the trail:

  1. While being alone in the woods sounds relaxing, it's not safe. Travel with a companion in case of an emergency. Make sure someone else has your itinerary and other personal information.
  2. Hiking or walking the trail is a great way to exercise, but don't try going on a strenuous trip if you aren't in good physical condition. If you are on medication or suffering from any ailments, talk to your doctor.
  3. Can you spot the symptoms of heat exhaustion, heat stroke or dehydration? If not, research it. Know the basic of first aid and how to treat these ailments and other injuries.
  4. Perform warm-up exercises before starting out that get your muscles warmed up and your heart rate up.
  5. While drinking a few beers on the trail sounds like a great idea, it probably isn't. Drink with caution. Stay away from cliffs and other steep areas that would be unsafe when your balance and agility are reduced due to alcohol. Alcohol will also dehydrate you when you need to be well hydrated.
  6. Take time to rest to recover from strenuous activity.
  7. Drink plenty of water to stay well hydrated and energized while hiking. Don't drink your whole water supply before refilling
