Luncheon to support the fight against breast cancer
Stories of hope. Words of encouragement. A community coming together to fight a common enemy – breast cancer.
On Oct. 21, Spartanburg Regional Foundation will host An Uplifting Event – a luncheon at the Spartanburg Marriott that brings community members together to support the Bearden-Josey Center for Breast Health.
The annual fundraising event presents stories of hope and encouragement as well as perspectives on advances in the fight against breast cancer.
The Bearden-Josey Center for Breast Health serves women through mammography screenings, a mobile mammography program, education outreach and more. The Spartanburg Regional Foundation supports all of these efforts, including free mammograms for uninsured women in the Upstate.
“The breast health center is such an important asset for our community,” said Dania Beck, director of philanthropy and liaison to the Foundation's cancer division. “Funds raised at An Uplifting Event make a difference for thousands of women in need.”
Beck expressed the Foundation's gratitude for everyone who contributes to make this event a success each year – sponsors and table hosts, guest speakers, the co-chairs, volunteers, and all who attend.
Kim Toler, MD, will be this year's featured speaker and will share her story as a breast cancer survivor. Event co-chairs are survivors Jennifer Orseck and Anita Patel; both have been featured speakers at past Uplifting Event luncheons.
Julie and Jon Jensen are the presenting sponsors for the 2019 Uplifting Event.
“It is important to us to raise greater awareness about cancer and cancer prevention and to help community members better understand what a great resource we have in Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System,” Jon said.
Diamond earring raffle to support An Uplifting Event
In addition to funds raised at the luncheon, there will be a special fundraising raffle. Smithworks Fine Jewelry has contributed diamond earrings with a retail value of $10,000 that will go to the winner of the raffle. Tickets are $100 each, and the winner will be announced at the luncheon.
Smithworks owner Louis Smith's mother fought breast cancer, and he feels committed to helping other women facing a diagnosis.
“These are really beautiful earrings,” Beck said. “We know our raffle winner will be thrilled, and we are grateful to Louis for this generous donation.”
A kickoff event for the contest will be held at Smithworks Fine Jewelry from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Oct. 1. The store is located at 361 East Kennedy Street in Spartanburg. Call 864-573-5252 for information.
