During National Donate Life Month, we remember those who gave the gift of life through organ donation. While a loved one may be gone now, they still live on through the others that they helped.

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System and Sharing Hope SC honored organ donors during an organ donation tree memorial ceremony on April 11, 2017. The red maple tree stands as a living tribute to organ donors and their families.

Families of organ donors and recipients gathered to remember their loved ones, pouring sand around the tree, which will be in the Earth around the maple as it grows.

“Organ, tissue and eye donations are one of the ways we fulfill that commitment,” said Shonna Bible, RN. “Our clinical teams do everything possible to save lives, and when we've done all we can, we want to give every family the right to have the option of donation and every registered donor's wishes to be fulfilled. The gift of donation provides our community better health and productive lives.” 

There are currently 124,000 people waiting on an organ transplant in the United States. To put that into perspective:  if all those waiting were to fill Clemson's Death Valley Stadium and Bon Secours Wellness Arena, there would be approximately 27,000 people waiting to get in. In 2015, there were 30,974 transplants performed in the United States, the most there ever has been.
