Some people know what they want to do from an early age. For pediatrician Michele Sayles, MD, it goes back to before she can remember.

“My parents always tell the story of how I had a toy stethoscope,” Dr. Sayles said.

Dr. Sayles always wanted to be a pediatrician, and now she is seeing patients at Medical Group of the Carolinas – Family Medicine and Pediatrics – North.

Dr. Sayles brings a world of life experiences with her. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia to Lebanese parents, Dr. Sayles has lived in many places, including France. She is fluent in Arabic.

She attended middle and high school in Lexington, S.C., where her father worked at Michelin. He continues his career with the tire maker at its Spartanburg plant.

“He moved to the Upstate before me,” Dr. Sayles said. “That's one of the reasons I came here.”

Dr. Sayles started dating her husband, Kevin, in high school. They both attended Clemson, and Dr. Sayles performed her residency in Greenville. The two married after a long-distance relationship during medical school.

While at Clemson, Dr. Sayles earned a place on the President's List every semester.

When she's not traveling, Dr. Sayles is writing a teen-focused science fiction novel with a friend.

“We took it up as a hobby,” Dr. Sayles said.

Since she knew from a young age she wanted to be a pediatrician, Dr. Sayles has immersed herself in everything kid-related.

“For me, I love pediatrics. You can really make a difference,” Dr. Sayles said. “The pediatrician's role is so important in who a child will become.”

During an appointment, Dr. Sayles lets her patients “examine” her. She makes sure to include them in the conversation, not just talk to the parent.

“I think you have to think like a kid,” Dr. Sayles said. “When a kid comes in, they don't know why they're there. They have no idea.” 

One bonus at the new practice – Dr. Sayles will be working with an old friend – Natalie Vajta, MD. The two have known each other since the first year of medical school in 2012.  

“Now we're going to be together every day!” Dr. Sayles said.
