Structural Heart Symposium 

Saturday, Oct. 1, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center — Pelham Conference Rooms A & B 

Structural heart disease is one of the fastest-growing fields in cardiovascular medicine. Incredible technological advancements have made it possible for many people with structural heart disease to be treated with minimally invasive procedures that offer lower risk, less trauma and a faster recovery. Join us for this continuing education program and learn how to identify clinical presentations of structural heart disease and the latest treatment options available. This symposium is designed specifically for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and cardiology nurses. 

 

Prepared Breastfeeding   

Monday, Oct. 3, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Tuesday, Oct. 18, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Online Class   

This two-hour class will help you get a healthy start to breastfeeding your newborn. Learn about milk production, feeding cues, latching techniques, milk storage and problem-solving tips for successful breastfeeding. A certified lactation consultant teaches this class. Healthy & Balanced — Pelham   

Wednesday, Oct. 4, 4 to 5 p.m.  

Gibbs Cancer Center — Pelham Demo Kitchen, second floor  

Healthy & Balanced is a weight loss and physical activity support group for cancer survivors. Maintaining a healthy weight, consuming a nutrient-rich diet and engaging in regular physical activity after the completion of cancer treatment can be challenging. However, with the proper tools and support, you can find your healthy balance while achieving your weight loss and physical activity goals. Join us monthly and work towards being healthy and balanced. Register to be contacted by our Survivorship Program Manager to discuss your participation in the program. Spartanburg Medical Center 

A certified lactation specialist facilitates an open, supportive forum to talk about the challenges and joys of breastfeeding. This casual gathering is for breastfeeding moms and babies from birth through six months. Meet other mothers, discuss concerns and learn tips on breastfeeding and life with a new baby.

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System is hosting a hiring event at Spartanburg Community College, Union County Campus. At this event, you will meet our hiring leaders and have the opportunity to speak about various employment opportunities. 18th Annual Interpersonal Violence Conference 

Friday, Oct. 7, 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.  

This one-day program will allow service providers to expand their knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of interpersonal violence. Law enforcement officers, judges, attorneys, VSPs, nurses, social workers and counselors/therapists will receive Continuing Education Credits. Our community could see fewer incidents with increased collaboration and communications between organizations that assist victims after an act of interpersonal violence. Online Class   

Learn everything you need to know about the childbirth process and the options available to you during pregnancy, labor and delivery. The information you learn in this comprehensive, fact-based class will help reduce your anxiety and help you have a more positive birth experience. 7th Annual Symposium on Mental Health Issues 

Thursday, Oct. 13, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. 

Piedmont Club  

This one-day program will focus on mental health issues such as addiction, hoarding, aging families, dissociative identity disorder and juvenile onset of bipolar disorder. Attendees will hear from professionals and gain the tools needed to help provide quality care to those facing mental health issues. This event is eligible for Continuing Education Credits. Weight Loss Surgery Support Group   

Thursday, October 13, noon to 12:30 p.m. 

Online Support Group   

An Upstate area support group for patients in all phases of the surgical weight loss process. Network with others who have experienced similar challenges with the lifestyle changes necessary to lose weight and keep it off successfully. Click on the date above to register.

Thursday, October 13, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Online Class   

This class focuses on routine care for your newborn. Topics include breastfeeding, bathing and medical and safety information. Your spouse or support person is encouraged to participate. Click on the date above to register. 

 

Just the Ticket: Child Passenger Safety  

Monday, Oct. 17, 4 to 5 p.m.  

Online Event  

This class is designed specifically for violators of the Child Passenger Safety law. You will learn proper child passenger safety.   

During this comprehensive course, offered by Spartanburg Medical Center and Safe Kids of the Piedmont, you will learn about South Carolina's child passenger safety laws, the safest way to secure your child in a vehicle, proper car seat installation, when to update or replace your child's car seat and other safety tips to help keep your child safe on the road.   

Attendees who have violations of the child passenger occupant law on their records can receive a certificate of completion as proof of participation. This class is only offered once for child passenger occupant violations. 

 

Diabetes Wellness Circle   

Tuesday, Oct. 18, noon to 1 p.m. 

Online Support Group   

Diabetes care and education specialists offer support, encouragement and education to anyone with diabetes. Support persons are also encouraged to attend. Click on the link above to register. 

 

Child Passenger Safety Seat Inspection   

Wednesday, Oct. 19, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center   

A certified child passenger safety technician will inspect your child's car seat for proper installation. Click on the link above to register, then call 864-560-6845 before your appointment for directions to the inspection station on the campus of Spartanburg Medical Center. 

 

Cardiac Connection

Safe Kids 101 for New and Expecting Parents   

Thursday, Oct. 20, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online Class   

This one-hour webinar includes basic car seat features, installation techniques and choosing an appropriate car seat based on your child's age, height and weight. You will also learn ways to avoid accidents in the home involving fire, burns, drowning, falls and poisoning. Click on the link above to register. 

 

Girls’ Night In: Self Care as a Breast Cancer Survivor   

Thursday, Oct. 20, 6 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center — Pelham Conference Rooms A & B 

This evening provides Gibbs breast cancer patients and survivors an opportunity to come together and learn about basic self-care techniques during and after cancer treatments. Dr. Ashley Kerekes will discuss the benefits of self-care and help current and past patients feel like themselves again. The hour-long event will be a time for fellowship among survivors and helps patients feel supported by others facing similar circumstances. Light refreshments will be served. Appreciation goes to Carolinas Plastic Surgery for supporting Gibbs breast cancer survivors. Through partnerships like theirs, we can "Make hope happen, together." Gibbs Cancer Center — Pelham Conference Rooms A & B 

We often take our feet for granted until foot and ankle pain stop us in our tracks. Join us for lunch as we learn from orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Alexander MacDonell with Medical Group of the Carolinas as he shares ways to keep your feet and ankles healthy. He will also review common foot and ankle conditions and the most appropriate treatments to help eliminate pain. 

 

Virtual Veg Edge: Fall Stew 

Wednesday, Oct. 26, noon to 1 p.m. 

Online event 

This month, it's tempeh, lentil and sweet potato chili to warm your heart and belly. This one-pot stew is easy, full of fiber and protein, and a great introduction to the fermented soy-based food tempeh if that is new to you. Join Dawn Maddux and Kerri Stewart of the Joe R. Utley Heart Resource Center as they share recipes and cook a meal centered around whole food plant-based nutrition.

Gibbs Cancer Center Auditorium - Spartanburg 

Please wear comfortable clothing and join physical therapist Lauren Toth as she discusses how to stay safe and active. She will provide tips and recommendations for preventing falls and improving balance. Group exercises will follow the discussion session.
