Spartanburg Medical Center 

A certified lactation specialist facilitates an open, supportive forum to talk about the challenges and joys of breastfeeding in a casual gathering for breastfeeding moms and babies from birth through six months. Meet other mothers, discuss concerns and learn tips on breastfeeding and life with a new baby.    

 

Grief Support Group

Cleveland Park Events Center  

Falls in people ages 65 and older are among the most common injuries in that age population. As a result, many seniors are unable to live an independent lifestyle. 

The Stay Active & Independent for Life (SAIL) program is a free fall prevention program that includes a one-hour, twice-per-week group fitness class where all participants work at their own pace. Any person over the age of 50, including those that use walkers or canes, can participate in the SAIL program.

Spartanburg County Public Library 

We understand the excitement yet overwhelming emotion that often occurs when you are on the path to becoming or are new parents. Our goal is that Baby Lounge serves as the support you find beneficial. Come and experience the community of other families who are also navigating similar stages. Expect to have casual conversations, small educational tidbits, and open dialogue to support one another along this journey.  

We encourage you to self-check your blood pressure and we have a scale where you can weigh your baby. We also provide light snacks. Support persons are encouraged to join.

Gibbs Cancer & Research Institute - Spartanburg 

Join Dr. Janet Lafrancois, certified yoga therapist and Iyengar yoga teacher, in practicing basic to advanced yoga with a focus on cancer patients and survivors. Attendees are welcome to bring their own mats, blocks and other yoga tools to the class. If this is your first time attending, a mat and block will be provided for you to use. Registration is required so that we can make space for all attendees.

Middle Tyger YMCA Family Center  

Pelham Medical Center is partnering with the Middle Tyger YMCA Family Center to offer a free blood pressure screening. In addition to having your blood pressure checked, you will receive a tracking card to help keep up with your numbers, plus education about what the numbers mean and ways to control hypertension.  

 

Prepared Parents: Infant CPR

In collaboration with our March of Dimes NICU Family Support program, we are excited to offer our community an infant CPR class. 

Infant CPR offers lifesaving safety information. This non-certification infant CPR class is designed specifically for expectant parents. Our essential hands-on class provides the skills and confidence to turn a life-threatening situation into a lifesaving one. Come gain the confidence, skills and knowledge essential to saving an infant's life.  

 

Healthcare Power of Attorney Assistance  

Thursday, Nov. 9, 1 to 3 p.m. 

Pelham Medical Center 

A health care power of attorney (also referred to as an advance care plan or advance directive) is a legal document that provides instructions for medical care and only goes into effect if you cannot communicate your own wishes. Advance care planning is not just for people who are very old or ill. At any age, a medical crisis could leave you unable to communicate your own health care decisions. 

Do you have questions about your healthcare power of attorney? Would you like assistance in completing the form? If so, Clegg Taylor, chaplain at Pelham Medical Center, will answer questions you may have and help you complete your form during a 30-minute, private appointment. A spouse or loved one is welcome to attend with you. 

 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Union Prostate Cancer Support Group 

Thursday, Nov. 9, 5 to 6 p.m. 

Union County Carnegie Library 

Are you a man who recently received a prostate cancer diagnosis? Have you been fighting cancer for years, or recently beat the disease? Join Gibbs Cancer Center in Union for our first-ever prostate cancer support group. 

This group is open to men of all stages in their prostate cancer journey and aims to connect, empower and encourage all who join us. No one should fight cancer alone! Please call: 864-530-6561 to register. 

 

Prepared Parents: Infant Care   

Thursday, Nov. 9, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center     

This course prepares expectant parents for their baby's impending arrival. Topics include breastfeeding, diapering, bathing, and medical and safety information. A local pediatrician and a perinatal educator will lead this class.

Prediabetes: Could it be You?  

Tuesday, Nov. 14, noon to 1 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer & Research Institute - Pelham  

With prediabetes your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. If you ignore prediabetes, your risk for type 2 (T2) diabetes goes up as well as the risk for developing other serious health complications. 

But there is good news! Prediabetes is a modifiable risk factor for developing diabetes. Madison Pate, certified diabetes care and education specialist with Medical Group of the Carolinas - Diabetes Education, will share why an early diagnosis and intervention is critical and how simple lifestyle changes are the cornerstone to preventing or eliminating the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Learn everything you need to know about the childbirth process and the options available during pregnancy, labor and delivery. In this class, we provide the information you need to reduce anxiety and help you have a more positive birth experience. Prepared Childbirth is a comprehensive, fact-based and fun class covering various topics about your baby's birthday.    

 

Cardiac Connection - Heart Failure 

Wednesday, Nov. 15, noon to 1 p.m. 

Spartanburg Regional Heart Wellness Center  

Living with and understanding heart failure can be scary, not to mention stressful to navigate. Join us this month as we discuss the unique signs and symptoms of heart failure by one of our specialists. 

Cardiac Connection is a monthly community group that supports people of all ages who have experienced a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke, had surgery related to the heart or are at risk for heart disease. Relevant topics and speakers vary each month. 

In addition, we offer encouragement and lifestyle improvement activities. You may also connect with others who have had similar experiences. If you or a loved one are interested, please join us. 

 

Weight Loss Surgery - Online Support Group    

Thursday, Nov. 16, noon to 1 p.m. 

Online Event     

This group provides Upstate area support for patients in all phases of the weight loss surgery process. Combined with the help of friends and family members, this support group allows you to network with others who have experienced similar challenges and lifestyle changes after weight loss surgery. Patients who have not yet had surgery are encouraged to attend.    

 

Safe Kids 101 for New and Expecting Parents  

Thursday, Nov. 16, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online Event  

This one-hour webinar includes safety topics that will help you keep your child safe and avoid accidents and injuries. 

Class information includes information about basic car seat features, installation techniques and how to choose an appropriate car seat based on your child's age, height and weight. 

Learn ways to avoid accidents in the home involving fire, burns, drowning, falls and poisonings. Know how to identify safe and unsafe sleep environments for your baby. 

 

2023 Pediatric Care Symposium 

Friday, Nov. 17, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.  

Spartanburg Medical Center - Heart Center Auditorium  

The 2023 Pediatric Care Symposium is open to healthcare professionals with work or specific interest in the pediatric population. The event has three speakers who will provide updates on adolescent dating violence, adverse childhood experience and building resistance, and creating a support village for children.   

 

Just the Ticket: Child Passenger Safety 

Monday, Nov. 20, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online Event 

Spartanburg Medical Center and Safe Kids of the Piedmont will offer this comprehensive course for you to learn about South Carolina's child passenger safety laws, the safest way to secure your child in a vehicle, proper car seat installation, when to update or replace your child's car seat and other safety tips to help keep your child safe on the road. 

Attendees who have violations of the child passenger occupant law on their records can receive a certificate of completion as proof of participation. This class is only offered once for child passenger occupant violations. 

 

Diabetes Wellness Circle    

Tuesday, Nov. 21, noon to 1 p.m. 

Online Event   

Diabetes Wellness Circle is an online and in-person support group that supports, encourages and educates anyone living with diabetes. Everyone is welcome. Meetings consist of 30-45 minutes of education followed by 15 minutes of discussion. Please join the forum and then stay as long as you are able.    

 

Prepared Breastfeeding  

In-person Tuesday, Nov. 21, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

Our breastfeeding class is an in-depth introduction that includes the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby. In this class, you will learn about milk production, feeding cues, latching techniques, milk storage and problem-solving tips for successful breastfeeding.  

 

Colorful Cooking at Home with Dr. Courtney Jones 

Wednesday, Nov. 29, 3 to 4 p.m. 

Online 

Emergency Center physician, Dr. Courtney Jones, will whip up one of her family favorites - chickpea "tuna" salad. 

Adding color to your plate with plant foods is one of the most effective ways to achieve good health. Colorful Cooking at Home is designed to inspire, educate and showcase how simple and delicious dishes can be! Join host registered dietitian Kerri Stewart from the Joe R. Utley Heart Resource Center each month as she navigates different topics and dishes with the common theme of color.
