Don’t miss a beat

By Elby Bruce on September 27, 2016

Dancing gets your heart pumping and reduces your risk for cardiovascular disease.

Put on your dancing shoes, enjoy a night of music and don't miss a beat at Hangar B on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, at the Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport. Not only will you help your own heart, you will also help prevent heart disease in the Spartanburg community.

Hosted by the Spartanburg Regional Foundation Heart Division, proceeds from Hangar B go to Spartanburg Regional's Heart Center.

“The funds raised at Hangar B benefit the whole community; creating awareness that heart disease is preventable,” said Kristy Caradori, executive director of Spartanburg Regional Foundation. “We hope that with each year, we continue to improve the health of our community.”

Funds assist Spartanburg Medical Center, which achieved recognition as one of Healthgrades' top 50 hospitals in the United States for cardiac surgery in 2016. Spartanburg Medical Center is also the first in North and South Carolina to receive full Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI with Resuscitation Accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care.

Spartanburg Medical Center has a long-standing history of sharing heart health education to the community and provides exercise services for heart patients. Funds raised at Hangar B also allow the heart center to:

  • Provide free lipid and cholesterol screenings
  • Share nutritional information through small group tours at local grocery stores
  • Provide automated external defibrillators for local non-profits, schools and churches
  • Provide funds for medication equipment and transportation fees for patients

The heart center is able to do all this through the help of the Foundation and engaged community members and hospital associates.

“A lipid screening can be a wakeup call for someone with high cholesterol; springing them into action to change their ways,” said Lori Boyd, RN, coordinator of the SRHS Heart Resource Center. “Our role at the Heart Resource Center is to prevent heart disease in our community. Many people we see have high blood pressure and didn't know it or weren't taking their medication.”

The Heart Resource Center provides ongoing education to the community on the signs and symptoms of heart attack, as well as the importance of calling 9-1-1.

“The ability to be out in the community and reach people is amazing,” Boyd said. “The majority of those who need help are not within the walls of the hospital.”

More than 1,000 people participate in the annual Hanger B event to raise funds for the Foundation's Heart Division. The event  raised $70,000 in 2015. The ticket cost covers access to entertainment, dinner and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), as well as a T-shirt commemorating the event.

Returning to entertain the crowd is Party on the Moon, a group whose top-caliber talent has backed stars ranging from Beyoncé to Elton John to Earth Wind & Fire. Attendees will also have the opportunity to win a flight lesson courtesy of Adam Lockamy, whose father received care at the Heart Center.

Tickets are $60 before September 19 and $75 after or at door. To purchase tickets, visit RegionalFoundation.com.
