Building relationships through medicine

By Elby Bruce on July 18, 2017

In family medicine, physicians are able to watch their patients grow up — from children to adults. And during their time together, patients and physicians can become like family — something Janessa Perez-Motlis, MD, enjoys the most about the field.

Though being passionate about several types of medicine, she went into family medicine because of the broad range of care.

“I like family medicine because you work with prenatal, pediatrics and geriatrics,” she said. “I enjoy developing relationships with patients and families over time. I love that continuity of care and seeing the same patients grow through the years.”

Dr. Perez-Motlis and her husband, Andrew Motlis, MD, recently moved to Spartanburg to work with Medical Group of the Carolinas, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System's physician group.

The two met in medical school while in Chicago, and had a desire to move to South Carolina.

“My husband used to work as a lifeguard at Hilton Head and we love the area,” Dr. Perez-Motlis said.

Dr. Perez-Motlis is a new family medicine physician at Medical Group of the Carolinas – Family Medicine – Converse Heights. Her husband, Dr. Motlis, will be a gastroenterologist at Medical Group of the Carolinas - Gastroenterology – Spartanburg.

Dr. Perez-Motlis has wanted to be a doctor since she was a child.

“When I was younger, my grandfather died because of colon cancer,” she said. “That really affected me. I somehow wanted to save the world, and practicing medicine seemed like the best fit.”

Outside of the office, Dr. Perez-Motlis is extremely active. She loves to exercise and scuba dive. She encourages her patients to live healthier lifestyles, too.

“I want to help each patient achieve optimal health through not only promoting a healthy lifestyle, but encouraging disease prevention,” she said. “My vision for my patients is that they will live a longer life in full health.”
