Cleveland Park Events Center  

Falls in people ages 65 and older are among the most common injuries in that age population. As a result, many seniors are unable to live an independent lifestyle. 

The Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program is a free fall prevention program that includes a one-hour, twice-per-week group fitness class where all participants work at their own pace. Any person over the age of 50, including those that use walkers or canes, can participate in the SAIL program.

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Hospice Home is holding an adult community support group for those grieving the loss of a loved one.

Yoga with Jan 

Thursday, May 2, 5:45 to 7 p.m. - every Thursday in May  

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg 

Join Dr. Janet LeFrancois, certified yoga therapist and Iyengar yoga teacher, to practice basic to advanced yoga with a focus on cancer patients and survivors.  

Attendees are welcome to bring their own mats, blocks and other yoga tools to the class. If this is your first time attending, a mat and block will be provided for you to use. Registration is required so that we can make space for all attendees.

In collaboration with our March of Dimes NICU Family Support program, we are excited to offer our community an infant CPR class. 

Infant CPR offers lifesaving safety information. This non-certification infant CPR class is designed specifically for expectant parents. Our essential hands-on class provides the skills and confidence to turn a life-threatening situation into a lifesaving one. Come gain the confidence, skills and knowledge essential to saving an infant's life.  

 

Healthy and Balanced - Oncology Nutrition Support Group 

Monday, May 6, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg  

Maintaining a healthy weight and consuming a nutrient-rich diet after the completion of cancer treatment can be challenging. With the proper tools and support, you can find a healthy balance while achieving your weight management goals. 

Join us monthly and work towards being healthy and balanced. Our nutrition topic for this month will be, “looking beyond your plate for stress management.” 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

 

Community Blood Pressure Screening

Senior Action 

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases your risk for serious health problems, including stroke and heart attack. 

Pelham Medical Center partners with Senior Action Greenville to offer free blood pressure screenings. In addition to having your blood pressure checked, you will receive a tracking card to help keep up with your numbers plus education about what the numbers mean and ways to control hypertension. 

 

Prepared Parents: Infant Care   

Thursday, May 9, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center

This course prepares expectant parents for their baby's arrival. Topics include breastfeeding, diapering, bathing, and medical and safety information. A local pediatrician and a perinatal educator will lead this class. 

 

Breast Cancer Support Group 

Monday, May 13, 5:45 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg

The Survivorship Program offers a monthly opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to connect with one another. This unique offering is available to breast cancer patients and survivors at no charge. 

Research shows that taking part in support groups where you both give and receive help, is an effective way to reduce the stress and anxiety that can come with a breast cancer diagnosis. 

This support group will be led by Gail Ebert, MMFT, LMFT-A, CAMS-II, CPC of Illuminate Therapy, Spartanburg. 

 

Just the Ticket  

Monday, May 13, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online 

During this comprehensive course, offered by Spartanburg Medical Center and Safe Kids of the Piedmont, you will learn about South Carolina's child passenger safety laws, the safest way to secure your child in a vehicle, proper car seat installation, when to update or replace your child's car seat and other safety tips to help keep your child safe on the road. 

Attendees who have violations of the child passenger occupant law on their records can receive a certificate of completion as proof of participation. This class is only offered once for child passenger occupant violations. 

 

Cardiac Connection – BE FAST with Stroke 

Monday, May 13, noon to 1 p.m. - Gibbs Cancer Center - Pelham or online  

Wednesday, May 15, noon to 1 p.m. - Heart Wellness Center - Spartanburg  

Join us as the SRHS stroke rehabilitation staff shares information about signs and symptoms of stroke, how to respond and ways to prevent strokes from happening or recurring. 

If you plan to attend virtually, an email will be sent with the link to join once you have registered. 

Cardiac Connection is a monthly community group that supports people of all ages who have experienced a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke, had surgery related to the heart or are at risk for heart disease. Relevant topics and speakers vary each month. Bring your lunch and a friend! 

 

Music Therapy 

Tuesday, May 14, noon to 1 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program offers monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while engaging in music therapy. 

Music therapy interventions can target a variety of healthcare goals such as promoting wellness, managing stress, alleviating pain, expressing feelings and emotions, enhancing memory, improving communication, promoting physical rehabilitation, sensory processing and more. This session will be hosted by Carolina Music Therapy. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge.

 

 

Unlocking the Benefits of Pelvic Floor Therapy  

Tuesday, May 14, noon to 1 p.m. 

People often experience weakness in the pelvic floor muscles due to age, illness, surgery, childbirth and other conditions. Issues in the pelvic floor -- incontinence, constipation, urinary frequency or urgency and pain to name a few -- are a common condition. However, many people delay reporting such intimate conditions to their doctor. 

Pelvic floor therapy can help both men and women strengthen muscles, increase stability and promote proper function of the pelvic organs. Occupational therapist, Kim Mielke, with Spartanburg Regional's Pelvic Health Program, will explain the pelvic floor anatomy, address some common issues and share ways therapy works. 

 

Upstate Prostate Cancer Support Group

Gibbs Cancer Center - Pelham or online 

Join us at Gibbs Cancer Center - Pelham or online every second Tuesday of the month for learning opportunities and time to talk with fellow cancer patients and survivors. Our support group is a safe place to discuss your cancer diagnosis and what you are going through. 

The speaker for May will be Julie Cantrell, BSN, RN. Julie is one of the nurse navigators at Gibbs Cancer Center. Julie supports patients through their cancer journey at Gibbs and offers insight into what to expect during the treatment process and beyond. Julie will be sharing what her role does at Gibbs and how to get the most out of having a nurse navigator with you on your cancer journey. 

Light snacks will be provided. 

 

Safe Kids 101 for New and Expecting Parents 

Thursday, May 16, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online 

This one-hour webinar includes safety topics that will help you keep your child safe and avoid accidents and injuries. 

Class information includes information about basic car seat features, installation techniques and how to choose an appropriate car seat based on your child's age, height and weight. 

Learn ways to avoid accidents in the home involving fire, burns, drowning, falls and poisonings. Know how to identify safe and unsafe sleep environments for your baby. 

 

Skin Cancer Screening  

Thursday, May 16, 5 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg  

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg is hosting a free skin cancer screening event open to the public.  

 A skin cancer screening is fast, easy, and pain-free. This screening is open to adults ages 18 and older who are not currently under the care of a dermatologist. 

Registration is required for this event. 

 

 

Weight Loss Surgery - Online Support Group    

Thursday, May 16, noon to 1 p.m. 

Online Event  

This group provides Upstate area support for patients in all phases of the weight loss surgery process. Combined with the help of friends and family members, this support group allows you to network with others who have experienced similar challenges and lifestyle changes after weight loss surgery. Patients who have not yet had surgery are encouraged to attend.    

 

 

Union Prostate Cancer Support Group 

Thursday, May 16, 5 to 6 p.m. 

Union County Carnegie Library or online 

Join us at the Union County Library or online every second Thursday of the month for learning opportunities and time to talk with fellow cancer patients and survivors. Our support group is a safe place to discuss your cancer diagnosis and what you are going through.

Diabetes Wellness Circle

Diabetes Wellness Circle is an online and in-person support group that supports, encourages and educates anyone living with diabetes. Everyone is welcome. Meetings consist of 30-45 minutes of education followed by 15 minutes of discussion. Please join the forum and then stay as long as you are able.

Our breastfeeding class is an in-depth introduction that includes the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby. In this class, you will learn about milk production, feeding cues, latching techniques, milk storage and problem-solving tips for successful breastfeeding.  

 

Zentangle Art Class

The Survivorship Program will be offering monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while creating art projects. 

Join us for a Zentangle art class. This session will be hosted by Wofford College’s Youmi Efurd, PhD, in the Gibbs Auditorium.

Stop the Bleed

Shepherd’s Center  

Spartanburg Medical Center's Trauma Care Services, in collaboration with the Shepherd's Center, would like you to join them for this important training. 

Minutes count! Someone who is severely bleeding can bleed to death in as little as 5 minutes. That’s why bleeding control is the purpose of STOP THE BLEED training. The 60-minute formal presentation is followed by hands-on practice to ensure that participants feel confident in their ability to STOP THE BLEED.

Virtual care is a quick, convenient and cost-effective way to receive quality care without the need to miss work or travel to see a doctor. Patients can communicate with a medical professional from their mobile device or computer from work, home, or car. 

Offering this service to employees can be as simple as posting information on a bulletin board or in a breakroom without a formal partnership or contract. 

Business leaders are invited to join us during their lunch hour to learn more about the benefits of virtual care, the types of appointments available and the various telehealth services offered. Experience an appointment demonstration and take the opportunity to ask the team questions.

Come join us to learn about the benefits of Whole Food Plant Based Nutrition (WFPBN) every first Tuesday of the month.
